The Coronavirus crisis hasn’t been easy on any of us and there’s a lot of uncertainty regarding the future. We don’t have the answers to when all of this will be over, but one thing we know: there’s opportunity in difficult times too.
While we’ve already shared a series of suggestions on how to make money in a crisis as a photographer or videographer, this time we’ve collected a couple of ongoing photography competitions that can be helpful for future publicity and revenue.
The good part is that you don’t need to leave the house to participate in most of them. All you need is already-shot outstanding work and a dash of luck.

Palm* Photo Prize
The Palm* Photo Prize is an annual submission for a new generation of photographers, whose goal is to support and showcase the best of the new wave of visual creators. The work submission is free and from all of the photographs, 100 entries will be selected by Palm* Studios and showcased in an exhibition in May. The exhibited entries can then win several prizes.
The judges panel includes the Editor-in-Chief from i-D, Alastair McKimm, the Assistant Curator at TateModern, Sarah Allen, the Photo Editor at Polaroid Originals, Jessica Lopez, and many more.
Julia Margaret Cameron Award
The 15th Edition of the Julia Margaret Cameron Award gives you the chance of winning over $20,000 in prizes, a solo exhibition in FotoNostrum during the 6th Biennial of Fine Art & Documentary Exhibition, a stipend for travel and lodging expenses, and a gallery representation with FotoNostrum, Mediterranean House of Photography.
This special edition of the competition allows women photographers to participate in 23 thematic categories and male photographers in only one category.

LoosenArt is an online gallery and platform dedicated to contemporary visual arts. They have several calls for exhibition opened, where creative works from photographers and digital artists are welcomed.
Work submission is free of charge.
ND Awards
The ND Awards are a melting pot of outstanding and talented artists in the field of photography, where recognition, prestige and publicity are instantaneously earned by the winning entry.
The jury is composed by respected industry professionals, including gallery owners, publishers, editors and acclaimed photographers. The prizes include not only press, prestige, and features in the ND Magazine, but also several cash awards.
All About Photo Magazine — Portrait
The AAPM 10 “Portrait” invites photographers to explore humanity in each of us, whether through the classic studio portraits or the famous selfie.
Winners will receive $1,000 in cash awards, have their images published in the 10th issue of the AAP Magazine, and earn extensive press coverage and recognition.
Cortona On The Move
Cortona On The Move is a project that aims to spread and promote contemporary photography by bringing new creative talents and novel forms of visual communication to the forefront.
The Open Calls are their way to discover new talent and give photographers the opportunity to show their projects. Their awards can include solo shows, exhibitions, or funds.
International Photography Awards
This year’s International Photography Awards focus on Movement and challenge photographers to depict the concept through their lens.
The submitted images will be judged by a panel of +80 world renowned gallerists, photo editors, directors, and more. Entries will compete for $4,500 in total cash prizes and photographers of all levels of expertise are welcome to enter.
Life Framer
Life Framer is a photography award that sources and showcases work from amateur to established artists. Every edition is overseen by a world-renowned photographer or industry professional, such as Martin Parr, Bruce Gilden, and Philip-Lorca DiCorcia.
Each month winning photographers receive feedback, online exposure, $2,000 in cash prizes, and are exhibited in curated shows at gallery spaces worldwide.
British Journal of Photography
The British Journal of Photography takes an international perspective on contemporary photography, focusing on fine art, documentary, and the cutting edge of editorial and commercial practices.
Known for running a number of successful events and exhibitions that reach a thriving creative audience, they constantly have open calls that photographers can apply to.
The Independent Photographer
The Independent Photographer is currently looking for entries based on the theme Street photography. Whether the subject is your own city or other territories and cultures, they are aiming to see each photographer’s idiosyncratic approach.
The awards include $2000 in cash prizes and having your work published and exhibited internationally.
